On Thursday, March 21st, our Environmental experts, Mara Angelini (Barros & Errázuriz), Lina Correa (Gómez-Pinzón), Paula Pérez (Mijares, Angoitia, Cortés y Fuentes), and Alberto Ventura (Miranda & Amado) participated in our webinar “World Water Day: Water Landscape in Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru”.
In Chile, Mara emphasized the need to advance regulations for desalination and water reuse, especially in the industry and agriculture sectors. “Desalinated water has been growing tremendously over time, which is of great importance to the mining industry to reduce the use of primarily groundwater,” she shared.
Meanwhile, in Colombia, Lina highlighted the importance of water recirculation and reuse to combat water stress and improve access to potable water. “Only 37% of the country’s rural areas have access to public water services, underscoring the urgency to improve water distribution,” she noted.
In Mexico, Paula emphasized the water crisis in Mexico City and the need for urgent measures to guarantee access to potable water. “Mexico is experiencing a water crisis, with systems operating at minimal capacity due to drought conditions and deforestation,” she stressed.
In Peru, Alberto pointed out the implementation of sustainable practices in the mining and energy sectors to address water stress and promote efficient resource management. “In the country, only 50% of the population has real access to water, despite ranking eighth in water availability worldwide,” he expressed.
